Blog #5: Proper US Flag disposal
How do you properly dispose of a US Flag? What do I do with an old, worn US Flag?
-Never, ever throw away a US Flag. Instructions on disposing of an old US flag are as follows, according to the VFW:
1. The US Flag should be folded in the proper manner.
2. Build a fire of sufficient size and intensity to ensure whole burning of the flag.
3. Place flag in the fire.
4. Individuals participating in the flag burning ceremony should then come to attention and recite the pledge of allegiance and then a brief moment of silent reflection.
5. Once the flag has completely burned, the fire should be extinguished and the ashes should be buried.
-Or if you live in an area with strict fire codes or simply don’t have the time to execute a proper disposal of your flag, then there are many organizations who will take your flag and dispose of it properly. Organizations such as your local boy scout troop, YMCA, many veteran organizations, and even police and fire departments.
